Catchphrases & Verbal Tics
The vocabulary chapter was about the words people choose. This one is about the words people can't stop saying — the verbal tics, the reflexes, the little phrases that bolt themselves onto the front and back of every thought without permission. Nobody decides to say these. They leak out in the gaps, which is exactly why they're so reliable. A person can guard their opinions. Almost no one guards their fillers.
A catchphrase is a thought's packaging. The tic is the sound the packaging makes.
TELL #1 — The Truth-Stamp
Phrases whose only job is to insist that what follows is honest — which, as any reader of Chapter 5 now knows, means it's about to get bumpy.
BLUE SPECIMEN: "Honestly?" / "To be fair…" / "I mean, genuinely…" — the word "honestly" deployed as a little flag planted before a take, as if the rest of the conversation had been a warm-up of lies. "To be fair" is the Blue specialty: it precedes the speaker being fair to a position they're about to demolish, which is its own kind of flex.
RED SPECIMEN: "Frankly…" / "Let's be real…" / "I'll tell you what…" — "frankly" doing the identical job, planting the same flag, promising a candor that the sentence didn't actually need announced. "I'll tell you what" precedes being told what.
VERDICT: "Honestly" and "frankly" are the same word wearing different cardigans. Both announce sincerity precisely when sincerity should go without saying — and the announcement, not the content, is the tell. Genuinely honest people rarely lead with "honestly." They just say the thing. The stamp is for the times the thing needs help getting through.
TELL #2 — The Intensifier
The words people sprinkle on a sentence to make it weigh more, deployed so often they've stopped weighing anything at all.
BLUE SPECIMEN: "literally" (almost never literally), "so" ("I'm so not okay with that"), "deeply" ("I'm deeply uncomfortable"), "such a" ("it's such a vibe"). The Blue intensifier turns feeling up to maximum on small things: a salad can be "literally life-changing."
RED SPECIMEN: "100%", "absolutely", "every single time", "believe me." The Red intensifier turns certainty up to maximum: not "I think" but "100%," not "often" but "every single time." "Believe me" is the load-bearer — a request for trust that substitutes for the evidence that would have earned it.
VERDICT: Both tribes are inflating the currency, just in different denominations. Blue inflates feeling ("literally dying"); Red inflates certainty ("absolutely, 100%"). After enough inflation neither word buys anything — "literally" no longer means literally, "every single time" doesn't mean every time — and both speakers have to keep adding more to get the same effect. It's the same spiral. It's just measured in different units.
TELL #3 — The Conversational Reset
The phrase that hits the reset button mid-conversation — wiping the table to start the point over on the speaker's terms.
BLUE SPECIMEN: "So here's the thing…" / "I think what's really going on is…" / "Can we back up?" — a gentle hand on the wheel, steering the conversation back to the framing the speaker prefers. "What's really going on" announces that your version was the surface and theirs is the depth.
RED SPECIMEN: "At the end of the day…" / "Bottom line…" / "Here's the deal." — a firm gavel, collapsing the conversation down to the conclusion the speaker arrived with. "At the end of the day" skips the day entirely and reads you the verdict.
VERDICT: One reset expands ("let's back up, there's more depth here"), one contracts ("let's cut to it, it's simpler than that") — but both are the same maneuver: seizing the frame. Blue reframes by going deeper; Red reframes by going shorter. Either way the conversation just got relocated to home turf, and you followed it there without noticing the address changed.
COMMON MISIDENTIFICATIONS
"It is what it is." Bipartisan. "At the end of the day." Bipartisan (see above; it's so common it appears in two chapters). "No worries." Crossover. "You do you." Crossover, though it leans Blue and is never sincere in either dialect — "you do you" is the sound of a door closing politely. Do not identify on filler alone. The tic tells you a person has a dialect; the content tells you which.
ADVANCED IDENTIFICATION: The Borrowed Tic
The specimen who has recently spent time in the other tribe's media will leak the other tribe's tics — a conservative who's started saying "problematic" unironically, a progressive who's picked up "at the end of the day, it's common sense." This is the verbal equivalent of an accent bleeding through after a long trip. It tells you not where they're from but where they've been lately — which is sometimes the more interesting fact.
SO. ABOUT YOU.
Read the last thing you texted. The last email you sent. Find your tic — the word you put before the real sentence, the one you'd swear you don't lean on.
You have a "honestly." You have a "literally" or a "100%." You have a reset phrase you reach for when you want the table back. You've said it three times today and heard yourself say it zero.
That's the thing about tics. They're the most you part of your speech and the part you can hear the least. Everyone else hears it fine.
